How to Detox from Cannabis

Posted 6 years ago by Ian Shutts

If you wish to detox from cannabis it will take some time for your body to flush out cannabis from your system since the cannabinoids are fat soluble. Unlike other drugs that are water soluble, this cannabinoid property allows them to be stored in your fat cells before they slowly spread to your blood and then eliminated from your body.

The cannabinoids, specifically THC, can easily be detected in your blood, urine, saliva, and even your hair as well as fingernails. In fact, cannabis is considered to have the longest detection time and can take months before it’s completely eliminated from your system.

Its removal depends on a number of factors – your metabolism, your body’s fat percentage, your lifestyle, your eating habits, and your marijuana use. For one-time cannabis users, it will take about five to eight days before cannabis is eliminated from their system, and for chronic and daily users, it will take anywhere from 49 to 63 days. For people with slow metabolism, high body fat percentage, sedentary lifestyle, and poor diet, it will take them longer to get rid of cannabis from their system compared to those who are physically active and have better eating habits.

The only way to detox from cannabis is to stop using it in the first place and let nature take its course. However, if you want to detox faster, then do it the safe way.

Get on an Exercise Routine

One of the best ways of detoxifying from cannabis is to get on an exercise routine. The more you burn fat, the faster it will be released into the blood, and the sooner your body can get rid of it.

Of note, if you’re going to have a drug test in about a couple of days, exercising may not be a good option for you. The moment you burn fat and the cannabinoids are released into your bloodstream, your plasma THC concentration will rise by as high as 15%.

However, if you have no drug test to worry about, then get on your treadmill, jog around your neighborhood, or hit the gym. Do anything, really, that will get you sweating.

Drink Plenty of Water

Since you will be exercising and sweating a lot, then you will need to drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated. Our kidneys need water to flush out the toxins from our body, including cannabis metabolites.

Of note though, water, by itself, won’t help remove traces of cannabis from the body. So if you’re thinking of drinking tons of water a day or two before a drug test, don’t. It will dilute your urine, yes, but you will also be at risk of failing your drug test. Your urine specimen will probably show lower creatinine value, lower specific gravity, and an abnormal pH level – all indicators of urine dilution.

Nevertheless, drinking plenty of water will be good for you if you’re going to detox from cannabis safely.

Start Eating Healthy Foods

Now’s the time to quit eating fatty foods and start loading up on healthy foods like fruits and vegetables.

You should know that THC and its metabolites are excreted not just in the urine but in the feces as well. In fact, one study revealed that urination only excretes about 20% of the cannabis you consumed, while defecation excretes more than 65% of cannabis.

Fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber which promotes good digestion and proper elimination of waste products. These natural fibers found in fruits and vegetables will help flush cannabis and its metabolites out of your system.

Remove Temptations

If you truly want to detox from cannabis, then you need to remove everything that might tempt you to light a joint. So throw away your lighter, your ashtrays, and your cannabis stash. In fact, it’s better if you don’t have any emergency cannabis stash hidden around your home.

If the craving is too strong to resist, then distract yourself with activities. Get out of the house, go see a movie, walk your dog, go to a park for a nature trip – whatever it takes to get your mind off cannabis.

Deal with Withdrawal Symptoms Naturally

If you’re experiencing some withdrawal symptoms, know that a good support system will help you a lot. It’s going to be a long and bumpy road, and you’re going to need all the help and support you need. So surround yourself with like-minded people who’ll help you through this.

Drinking warm herbal tea will also help relieve stress, anxiety, sleeplessness, and irritability associated with cannabis detox. Some of these teas include Indian ginseng tea, valerian root tea, dandelion tea, chamomile tea, and ginkgo tea.

Detoxing from cannabis is difficult, especially if you’re a chronic user. But through support, healthy lifestyle, and making conscious choices, you can successfully detox from cannabis.
